Increased production boosts Evergreen Forests

New Zealand`s Evergreen Forests Limited has announced an operating profit of NZ$4.270 million for the six months ended December 2002 (December 2001: NZ$3.540 million). North American Business boosts New Zealand Forest industry

New Zealand`s Fletcher Challenge Forests has reported a NZ$4 million net profit in the first half to 31 December 2002, turning around a NZ$302 million loss after write-offs on the Central North Island Forest Partnership. Canada: Forestry products trade surplus

Forestry products trade surplus declined Can$2.9 billion to Can$33.5 billion in 2002. In December exports bounced back from two consecutive monthly declines with a 2.9% increase in December to Can$3.0 billion. Newsprint and other paperboard exports grew 7.3%to $1.1 billion. Paper capacity falloff

According to the 43rd Annual Capacity Survey of the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) U.S. paper and paperboard capacity fell in 2001 and 2002. This is the first time that total industry capacity declined in consecutive years. Paper and paperboard capacity of 1.9% in 2001 and 1.3% in 2002. US-Dollar weakens M-Reals profitability

In 2002 M-real Group’s operating profit fell to EUR 324.3 million from EUR 389.2 million in the previous year. The main reasons for the weakened profitability were the lower selling prices of paper coupled with the fall in the exchange rate of the United States dollar. Myllykoski 2002 figures affected by low paper price

Net sales of the Myllykoski Group totalled EUR 1,458 million in 2002, or 7.2% less than in the previous year (EUR 1,571 million). Acquisition of the 50% share of Albbruck from M-real contributed EUR 86 million to the 2002 net sales. Production and sales of paper and sales prices were lower than in 2001. Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,781,000.
